SWADESH, an India-inspired art and craft exposition, celebrates this legacy through an ever-evolving showcase of regional artistry from across the nation. Driven by Founder & Chairperson Mrs. Nita Ambani’s dedication to preserving India’s artistic heritage, it serves as an interactive platform where master artisans share their craft and stories with the world. 

Since its inception, SWADESH has become a cornerstone of the Cultural Centre, transforming the Level 0 concourse into a welcoming space that brings the country’s rich diversity to life. Each pavilion is a living tribute to its region, inviting visitors to experience the artistry through meaningful conversations and live demonstrations. This dynamic showcase has celebrated over 30 iconic Indian crafts so far, each with a story as colourful and compelling as the art itself. With the unwavering support of the Reliance Foundation, SWADESH has played a pivotal role in preserving and nurturing the growth of traditional crafts like Pichwai painting, Sozni embroidery, and Blue Pottery, ensuring their legacy continues to thrive. 

This winter, as SWADESH turns a new page, step into a world where India’s creative legacy comes to life through five remarkable pavilions, each brimming with handmade treasures and extraordinary journeys that shaped them. This season’s edition features Kanjivaram silk of Tamil Nadu, Banarasi brocade from Varanasi, Thewa jewellery of Rajasthan, Thangka paintings from Ladakh and Sikkim, and Sunrise Candles from Maharashtra. Here’s a closer look at the latest collection. 

Kanjivaram Weaves – The Eternal Elegance of Tamil Nadu’s Silk Sarees 

Hailing from the sacred town of Kanchipuram, Kanjivaram silk sarees are best known for their lush hues, intricate designs, and unparalleled craftsmanship. Steeped in legend, the weavers of Kanjivaram are believed to trace their heritage to Sage Markanda, the divine master weaver of the Gods. Each saree is a masterpiece, meticulously woven using the age-old korvai technique, where borders are crafted with real gold or silver zari.  

Kanjivaram sarees are more than just garments — they are a canvas of cultural storytelling, with motifs drawn from temple architecture, mythological epics, and the natural world. At SWADESH, experience the beauty of Kanjivaram silk, where every piece captures the essence of Tamil Nadu's storied tradition. 

Banarasi Brocade – The Grandeur of Varanasi 

A symbol of luxury, Banarasi brocade is admired for its exquisite handloom weaving and rich texture. Famed for its elaborate zari work, each saree can take months to craft, with every thread embodying the cultural richness of Varanasi. Often chosen for weddings and grand celebrations, these sarees flaunt traditional motifs like jal, bel, and intricate floral patterns.  

At SWADESH, the Banarasi weaves on display are a tribute to Uttar Pradesh’s legacy, honouring the artisans whose skilled hands breathe life into the ancient traditions of one of India’s oldest and most revered cities. 

Thewa Jewellery – Rajasthan’s Mastery of Gold and Glass 

Originating from the vibrant town of Pratapgarh in Rajasthan, Thewa jewellery is a centuries-old craft that fuses delicate gold designs with coloured glass, creating pieces of breathtaking beauty. The art form captured the admiration of Maharaja Sumant Singh, who bestowed the honourary title of Rajsoni, or chief jeweller of the court, upon its master artisan. Today, just 12 families in Pratapgarh continue to preserve this rich legacy, maintaining the royal grace of Thewa.  

Each piece of Thewa tells a story — depicting scenes of nature, royal life, and majestic hunts. Celebrated globally, these creations have found a place in prestigious museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. At SWADESH, the Thewa collection highlights this remarkable heritage, where Rajasthan’s signature stained glass, intricate jaali work, and gold accents come together to reflect the artistic brilliance of Pratapgarh’s master craftsmen. 

Thangka Painting – Sacred Art from Ladakh and Sikkim 

Born from the spiritual heart of the Himalayas, Thangka paintings are detail-oriented, hand-painted scrolls that play a vital role in Buddhist rituals and meditation. Crafted on cotton or silk with natural pigments, these sacred artworks often depict Buddhist deities, mandalas, and the life of the Buddha, infused with profound spiritual meaning.  

Renowned for their precision and reverence, Thangkas are not just visual creations but embody the deep devotion and beliefs of the artist. At SWADESH, witness the symbolism and exquisite craftsmanship of Thangka art, where each painting opens a window into the sacred stories of Ladakh and Sikkim, inviting you into a world of divine beauty and spiritual insight. 

Sunrise Candles – A Beacon of Empowerment from Maharashtra 

Sunrise Candles, founded by Dr. Bhavesh Chandubhai Bhatia, goes beyond craftsmanship — it unfolds a tale of empowerment and social transformation. Unlike traditional crafts, this initiative offers employment to the visually impaired, who handcraft an inspiring range of candles in striking colours, unique shapes, and pleasing fragrances.  

Each candle is more than just a decorative piece — it is a symbol of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of opportunity. At SWADESH, Sunrise Candles not only light up the space with their warmth but enable inclusive artistry and sustainable livelihoods, casting a glow of purpose and positivity.
